It's a Matlab issue.
My experience is that SPM(2) is slower for processing but slightly
faster for stats on my Dual G5 compared to a Linux workstation (here,
I'm not talking about a Ferrari-style workstation with the fastest
processor, recompiled atlas libraries, etc., no, no, just an
"average" workstation). However, running 2 analyses/tasks at the same
time is faster than on a single-processor workstation - but this is
not specific to Mac.
