Every image that is converted from single-slice DICOM files gets the "s"
prefix. This is because at the FIL most structural images are single-slice
DICOM files, whereas functional images are usually in SIEMENS mosaic
format and get the "f" prefix. SPM can not know what kind of image you are
processing just by looking at the image data or the filename.

Do you get any useful error message? Normalisation should work for all
kind of images if
- there is enough coverage of the brain in your images (just a few thin
slices will not work)
- the origin of the image is quite close to AC, and the image is oriented
similar to the templates.
