One full-time Postdoctoral position (PD05) and two PhD positions (PhD05)
on fMRI of Conscious and Unconscious Cognitive Processing
are available from October 2005 for a period of 3 years in the group of Dr.
John-Dylan Haynes at the Max-Planck-Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain
Sciences in Leipzig, Germany.
Research focuses on functional brain imaging of conscious and unconscious
human cognitive processing in the domains of perception, attention and
executive control. A variety of methods are used including behavioural and
psychophysical measurements, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)
with use of two 3T scanners, and EEG/MEG recordings in humans. The specific
projects will build on previous work, especially using multivariate pattern
recognition applied to human brain responses to decode conscious and
unconscious processing in various cognitive domains. Experience in
cognitive neuroscience and neuroimaging and familiarity with neuroimaging
analysis platforms (such as SPM or BrainVoyager) are desirable, as well as
mathematical and scripting skills (especially MATLAB). The positions
require either a PhD (for the postdoc position) or a Diplom/BSc/MSc (for
the PhD positions) in a relevant field, such as neuroscience, cognitive
science, cognitive psychology or computer science/mathematics.
The successful candidate will play a key role in designing, conducting and
analysing experiments and will work as part of a multi-disciplinary
research team. The position offers excellent training in advanced aspects
of neuroimaging (such as cortical flattening, retinotopic mapping,
connectivity analysis, multivariate analyses). For further information and
applications please contact Dr. John-Dylan Haynes (Email:

In order to increase the proportion of female staff members, applications
from female scientists are particularly encouraged. Preference will be
given to disabled persons with the same qualification.
Please submit your application by 19.09.2005 and marked with "PD05"
or "PhD05" to:
