SPM automatically associates the *.mat file with the *.img|*.hdr image of
the same name.

I don't think so. Many people use Matthew Brett's mni2tal.m
transformation script. Search for it on these pages or via Google.

Don't know about that. If you know enough about programming, you can
trace where the error comes from by using the matlab debugging facility.
