Most of the toolboxes have equivalents in Octave as well - except
for the GUI functions. Octave currently uses gnuplot as the default
GUI - and there's currently talk of emulating the Matlab GUI with VTK++.
An example of a Matlab package which has been ported to Octave which
doesn't use a GUI, is

If SMP2 makes use functions and toolboxes which only exist in the
latest version of Matlab, then it could create problems in the short
term until the Octave community figures out how to emulate it.
