You can use ImCalc and specify the output format, as described in the
file itself:
spm_imcalc_ui(spm_get,'output.img','i1',{[],[],spm_type('uint8'),[]});
The interesting bit is the in the last {} brackets: here, you can
specify some special caes, including the output format.
