Hi - for the mac is is quite straightforward - just do:
cd <wherever>/spm5b/src
make all SUF=mexmac RANLIB="ranlib spm_vol_utils.mexmac.a" \
CC="cc -DBIGENDIAN" MEX="/Applications/MATLAB7/bin/mex -O -DBIGENDIAN"
cp *.a *mexmac ..
