Psychobiological Research. The creation of this new Institute has been
enabled by a generous endowment by Dr Mortimer Sackler and his family. The
aim of the Institute is to encourage neurobiological research relevant to
mental disorder. The Institute will provide a valuable focus for
collaborative work between several University departments. The stated
research purpose of the Sackler Institute is as follows:
To expand knowledge of the biological basis of emotional disorder through
application of state of the art techniques in neuroimaging, neurophysiology
and neuropsychology. Particular attention will be paid to the biological
basis of treatment response and recovery and to the clinical relevance of
the research.
The organisational context in which the Institute will operate is described
below:
The Institute is based within the Section of Psychological Medicine. The
Principal Investigator is Dr Jonathan Cavanagh. There are fundamental
links with Clinical Physics, Neurosciences and Psychology. The Sackler
Institute is a joint institute with the University of Edinburgh with whom
there will be joint projects. These projects will involve the use of
neuroimaging techniques to explore the biological underpinnings of
treatment response in affective disorders such as depression. The
techniques to be used include SPECT imaging and the use of 3T MRI in
structural and functional. The appointee will work with Dr Cavanagh in
specific research projects.
