Until Bill comes back from France, it could be a good start to read
Stephen Town's report on New Urban Urbanism and other approaches to
designing out crime:
Design Against Crime: Guidance for the Design of Residential Areas,
published by the European Union Commission in 2003.
I had this article somewhere, but only in paper form. There is an option
to try and reach this report via http://www.designagainstcrime.org/.
Also, to get a grip of how space syntax could be used for evaluating the
effect of built environment on the risk of crime, and the temporal/spatial
distributions of crime, you can read:
Alford, V. (1996). "Crime and space in the Inner City." Urban Design
Studies 2: 45-76.
Shu, S. C. F., Huang, J.N.H. (2003). Spatial configuration and
Vulnerability of Residential Burglary: A case study of a city in Taiwan.
4th International Space Syntax Symposium, London.
Shu's PhD thesis: Shu, S. (2000). Crime in Urban Layouts, University of
London.
About "constitution": Major, M. D. (2001). When is a door more than a
door? 3rd International Space Syntax Symposium Atlanta 2001, Atlanta.
You may know there are also lots of discussions on the web about new
urbanism. Just as links to warm up for the discussion:

I'm sure Bill will provide more connections and explanations as he
recently gave a talk at the Congress for New Urbanism in Pasadena, and he
has been focusing on the positive and negative aspects of not only new
urbanism but also of general conceptual approaches to the relationship
between crime and the built environment.
We are trying to bring more of an analytical light into this issue using a
London crime database that covers 5 years, together with a GIS dataset
from the corresponding council.
Please do not hesitate to contact us whenever you need during your study.
(and sorry I could not reply to this before, there was a problem with my
subscription to the list. )
