Hi,
Not so much an introiduction as a good bye,
I'm completing my PhD in the Spirituality of snowboarding (first draft done, many more to come no doubt, but I'm off to Canada, which brings accompanying problems of PhD administration. For the last five years I've been university chaplain at UCE Birmingham. I'm going to be a minister in a small town in British Columbia.
Anyway, thanks to many in this group for their support and interest, esp Abby and Matthew, and good luck to all on the PhD trail.
Neil

Subject: Introductions
Dear All
As you know, I'm new to the role of Postgrad Liaison for the Sociology of Religion Study Group. We only have a chance to meet twice a year - at the January/February Postgrad conference and the annual Study Group conference - but we can still contact each other in between.
One of the comments I've heard most at the face-to-face events is how useful it is to catch up with what other students are doing. I know I, for one, have received really helpful suggestions and contacts from fellow students that have helped in my work.
So, I thought it might be useful if we - the members of this email discussion group - introduced ourselves in this space. I was thinking maybe a name, institution, email address and a brief paragraph describing our work would be of interest to others and might be helpful as well.
For starters:
I'm Abby Day, PhD final year, Department of Religious Studies, Lancaster University. I'm doing empirical, qualitative research amongst people aged 14-80 to try to understand more about people's contemporary beliefs. I hope to shed light on the apparent paradox of a population who tended to tick 'Christian' on the 2001 census question asking 'what is your religion' yet barely participate in conventional religious practice.
Insights into how other students deal with issues of generalisation in small-scale studies like mine would be really helpful.
I hope other members of this group will introduce themselves so we can share from each other's experience and perhaps offer ideas.
All the best
Abby
