Description of the Doctoral Program in Sociology:
The principal aim of the Program is to educate students interested in
professional careers as sociologists in academic and/or applied contexts
with an emphasis on the study of issues in health, illness,
medicine, health care, and the analysis of health and public policies.
Coursework in the program is aimed at enabling students to develop their
understanding of and capacities to use sociological theory; develop both
qualitative and quantitative research skills, and statistical
capacities; develop a sociological perspective on the many dimensions of
health, illness, medicine, and health care; develop the focused,
independent research project necessary for completion of the doctoral
dissertation; and ultimately contribute to the advancement of
sociological knowledge.
Distinctive Characteristics of the Doctoral Program in Sociology
Situated on a health sciences campus, the Program's substantive emphases
lie in the sociology of health, illness, medicine, health care policy
and institutions. Within this domain, students select areas of emphasis
including: (1) aging, chronic illness, and disability; (2) health care
economics and policy; (3) science, technology and medicine studies; and
(4) gender, race/ethnicity, health and health disparities. Faculty are
also developing expertise in violence as a health issue, ethics of
contemporary genetics, corporate behavior in medicine, privatization,
and globalization of medicines. The theoretical bases of the program
focus on classical, interactionist, and contemporary sociological
perspectives, and the program has a dual orientation toward qualitative
and quantitative research methods. These orientations reflect the
current interests of SBS faculty, medical sociology, and the health and
science orientation of the campus. See also http://www.ucsf.edu/medsoc
