ESSA 2005
Representing social reality: approaches and results
The third annual conference of the European Social Simulation Association,
together with
· the autumn meeting of the Research Committee on Modelling and
Simulation of the German Sociological Association and
· the third Model to Model Workshop
will be held at the Koblenz Campus of the University of Koblenz-Landau
from September 5 to 9, 2005.
Streams
“Representing social reality” is a very broad theme, and ESSA 2005 is open
to all applications of simulation to social science; so all submissions
under the main theme will be welcome — the discussion should be about
social reality represented in models, not just about representing at
large, and results are more welcome than just approaches. Anyway, we want
to invite submissions particularly from the following fields:
· Involving users: participatory methods
· Microanalytical simulation models: supporting social policy
· Modelling culture, norms and reputation
· Replication and verification
· Agent-based models: supporting sociological theory building
· Qualitative and non-numerical approaches to simulation
· Physics based approaches to economics and social science
Tutorials
Applications to run tutorials will be welcome.

Venue
The conference will be held on the Koblenz campus of the University of
Koblenz-Landau, one of the newest campuses in Germany (built 1998–2000),
and hosted by the Faculty of Computer Science and its Department of
Information Systems Research.
Koblenz can be reached easily by train from the Cologne and Frankfurt
airports and by bus from Frankfurt-Hahn airport (timetables will be
available from the website) and is located at the northern entrance to the
Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage, at the confluence of Rhine and
Moselle.
Accommodation
A number of Koblenz hotels offers reduced rates for guests of the
university. A list and a map of those hotels with which we have made
provisional reservations can be found on the website (but not before
January 2005). Participants will have to make final reservations directly
with their preferred hotels. Reasonable prices are between 40 and 60 € per
night.
Schedule
September 5 (Monday): arrival of those participants who want to join
tutorials
September 6 (Tuesday): parallel tutorials;
arrival of most of the other participants;
get-together event (perhaps on a river boat, except the conference
dinner can be organised on a river boat)
September 7 (Wednesday): conference starts with a plenary session, lunch,
parallel sessions; evening free to visit wineries or breweries.
September 8 (Thursday): conference continues with plenary and parallel
sessions;
conference dinner (either on board a riverboat or in a winery in a
village near Koblenz)
September 9 (Friday): if necessary: more parallel sessions,
closing session (student paper award, panel discussion ...),
departure before or after lunch
If you want to spend the weekend before or after the conference in the
Middle Rhine valley, in order to obtain cheaper weekend flights or to
spend a few days as a tourist, you should ensure that you book early, as
hotel accommodation is in short supply during September.
