PhD Scholarship
Department of Sociology - Academic,
Faculty of Arts, The University of Auckland
Vacancy number A761-05E
Applications are invited for a three year Ph.D Scholarship to work with
Professors Peter Davis (Sociology) and Alastair Scott (Statistics) on a
project developing social simulation models of New Zealand society. The
project is funded by the Marsden Fund.
The PhD topic is modelling social change in New Zealand, with the
application of social simulation to Census data. The project involves
the application of recently developed computer-based simulation
techniques to Census data on cohabitation in order to test a model of
New Zealand's social structure in the rapidly changing demographic and
economic conditions of the period 1981-2001. The central research
question is whether the social structure- as reflected in the
distribution of matching socio economic and ethnic - choices of
co-habitation partner across households -became more highly stratified
and segregated over this period.
This PhD Scholarship is for a three year period of full-time study. The
stipend is $25,000 per year plus tuition fees. In addition a $500
allowance is payable to contribute to thesis binding costs.
Applicants should have an honours or masters degree either in the social
sciences with a willingness to apply modelling and quantitative
techniques, or in statistics, operations research and other numerical
and computational disciplines, and be prepared to work in a social
science environment. Experience in analysing large social survey or
health datasets would be an advantage.
Applications must include a curriculum vitae and cover letter to the
Head of Department, Sociology.
