UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD (UK)
SCHOOL OF MODERN LANGUAGES
DEPARTMENT OF RUSSIAN AND SLAVONIC STUDIES
POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES AND FUNDING
Postgraduate Programmes:
The Department offers an MA in Slavonic Studies (Research
Track) and PhD programmes by research in Russian Literary
and Cultural Studies and in Slavonic Languages and Linguistics.
Details about the MA is available at
{ HYPERLINK "http://www.shef.ac.uk/russian/graduate/ma-slavstud.html" }http://www.shef.ac.uk/russian/graduate/ma-slavstud.html. Details
of the research interests of members of staff are available at
{ HYPERLINK "http://www.shef.ac.uk/russian/staff/index.html" }http://www.shef.ac.uk/russian/staff/index.html.
An important role in the first research cluster is played by the
Bakhtin Centre, which promotes multi- and inter-disciplinary
research on the work of the Bakhtin Circle, and on related areas
of cultural, critical, linguistic and literary theory. Its scope thus
extends beyond the limits of traditional Russian and Slavic
studies. Details about the Centre are available at:

Funding opportunities
THE ARTS AND HUMANITIES RESEARCH BOARD
(AHRB)
UK/EU candidates for postgraduate study in the Department of
Russian and Slavonic Studies or the Bakhtin Centre are eligible
to apply, with the support of the Department/Centre, for funding
under the AHRB’s open competitions for postgraduate study,
further details of which may be found at
{ HYPERLINK "http://www.ahrb.ac.uk/apply/postgraduate.asp" }www.ahrb.ac.uk/apply/postgraduate.asp
Under the terms of a special scheme, for the next three years the
AHRB has ‘ring-fenced’ up to six three-year doctoral awards
for research projects on ‘East and Central European and Balkan
Studies: Literatures, History, Culture and Languages’.
Applications submitted via the Department of Russian and
Slavonic Studies may be directed, as appropriate, to this
scheme.
Any student wishing to make an application to the AHRB
supported by the University of Sheffield must apply for a place
at Sheffield no later than 11 March 2005, in order to allow time
for the processing of the AHRB application before the deadline
in early May.
University Research Studentships
Five studentships are annually available via this scheme. The
awards are allocated on a student basis, via an open
competition. Applicants for these awards are expected to
demonstrate that they have also submitted an application for
external funding (principally to AHRB or ESRC, though other
funding bodies will be considered).
Incentive Awards Scheme
The department can award up to three one-year Incentive
Awards, comprising of a maintenance stipend at the basic
Research Council rate. Awards can be made to new MPhil/PhD
students, and students who will be following a recognised
Research Masters who also intend to go on to doctoral study.
Please note that it is a key condition of eligibility that all those
students to whom an award is made must also have already
submitted an application for external funding (principally to
AHRB, though other funding bodies will be considered).
Fee Bursaries
These awards are open to new UK/EU and Overseas
applicants, though they operate differently in each case. We are
able to offer a limited number of awards for both full-time and
part-time study. The department makes final decisions on
awards during the early summer period prior to each new
academic session (i.e. for 2005 entry, by June/July 2005). You
are therefore advised to submit an application for admission well
in advance of this date (i.e. by Easter 2005 at the latest). The
award pays the standard UK/EU tuition fee for the duration of
your minimum period of study (3 years full time and 6 years part
time). However, there is no support for living expenses. The
award pays the difference between the standard Home/EU
tuition fee and the standard Overseas tuition fee for the duration
of your minimum period of study (3 years full time). Students in
receipt of such awards are therefore expected to find alternative
means of support for the remainder of the tuition fee. There is no
support for living expenses.
Overseas Research Students (ORS) Awards Scheme
ORS Awards provide funding to pay the difference between the
international research student tuition fee and the UK/EU
research student tuition fee. New awards are granted annually,
on a competitive basis, to international postgraduate students of
outstanding academic ability and research potential. Details are
available at:
{ HYPERLINK "http://www.shef.ac.uk/pgresearch/students/studentships/ors.html" }http://www.shef.ac.uk/pgresearch/students/studentships/ors.html.
WUN Global Exchange Programme
A limited number of Worldwide University Network (WUN)
Global Exchange Programme awards are annually available, to
enable postgraduate research students to undertake exchange
visits to WUN partner institutions in the USA and Europe.
Details are available at:
{ HYPERLINK "http://www.shef.ac.uk/pgresearch/students/studentships/wun.html" }http://www.shef.ac.uk/pgresearch/students/studentships/wun.html
