I am conducting a brief investigation for the Roads and Traffic
Authority of NSW looking at electronic stability control systems on
LIGHT VEHICLES. However, recent research on heavy vehicles may be useful
for the projectand so I thought I would circulate this request on the
RTT network.
The main purpose is to review technology, regulations and standards
relating to ESC and to identify methods of assessing systems for the
purpose of regulations or consumer testing. For example, Australian New
Car Assessment Program is considering whether to require ESC on
high-seat vehicles as a prerequisite for 5 stars (in recognition of the
increased rollover propensity of these vehicles and their ease in
scoring well in the side impact test).
I am seeking information about factors that need to be considered in the
assessment of these systems and any test procedures that are under
development.
I have some recent information from NHTSA (USA), Insurance Institute for
Highway Safety (USA) and Japan on light vehicle ESC.
I am interested in proposals to assess the response of systems to tyre
blow-outs and other unusual circumstances. One fairly common cause of
rollovers in Australia is the driver turning the steering wheel too
quickly when trying to return to the tar after straying onto the
unsealed road shoulder. This may be a difficult situation for ESC to
deal with.
If appropriate, I would appreciate it if you could forward this request
to researchers in this field.
