Hello,
I am currently undertaking a study of early railroads in the southern
United States. One of the common claims about the South Carolina
Railroad, completed in 1833, was that at that time it was the
"longest railroad in the world under single management."
In works written about the SCRR, this is usually stated as accepted
fact and without citation -- therefore it is unclear to me why the
"under single management" qualifier is generally included. I am
hoping that someone from this list might be able to directly to
appropriate literature where I could verify this claim and the need
for the qualifier.
Many thanks,
