The other side of mobility An ACA conference In cooperation with The
Internationational Programme Office, the Högskoleverket and the Swedish
Institute Hosted by the Royal Institute of Technology and supported by the
Nordic Council of Ministers
Stockholm
12-14 June 2005
ACA is glad to announce its next major event, an international conference
in Stockholm on the theme of mobility. ACA is organising this conference
together with its three Swedish members: the International Programme
Office, the Högskoleverket and the Swedish Institute. The event will be
hosted by Stockholm’s Royal Institute of Technology (KTH). The Nordic
Council of Ministers is kindly supporting the conference through a grant.
The event will take place in summer, when Stockholm is one of the most
enchanting places on earth. It targets practitioners of
internationalisation, academics and political decision-makers. It is
designed for a participation of up to 250 delegates.
International mobility is a concern of long standing, and innumerable
conferences have already been devoted to it. In order not to duplicate
earlier events, ACA will approach the issue from a new perspective. The
other side of mobility will not deal with the technicalities of exchange
and mobility. It will try to identify the impacts of mobility on the mobile
person. This “other side” of mobility, which should actually be the first
concern of all internationalist, has been astonishingly rarely addressed.
This is why we have little systematic knowledge, anecdotal evidence and a
few studies apart, what international mobility really does to the mobile
persons. Does it contribute, as is always assumed but rarely demonstrated,
to academic enhancement? Does it increase intercultural understanding and
lead to a widening of horizons? Does it contribute to peace and
understanding?
In pursuing these and many other questions, the conference will focus on
the mobility of students and academics, but it will not restrict itself to
mobility for learning and teaching. It will also encompass other forms of
temporary and lasting mobility, such as, for example, labour migration, or
mobility induced by personal motives and by force.
ACA is proud to announce the Swedish writer Henning Mankell as our keynote
speaker. Internationally acclaimed author Henning Mankell gained bestseller
stardom with his series of crime novels about inspector Kurt Wallander.
This ACA conference gives you an exceptional opportunity to meet him, hear
him speak about his international experience, and get your latest copy of
his books signed!
As every ACA conference, the Other Side of Mobility, will also feature
carefully selected high-level speakers from among higher education and
internationalisation experts. Among them will be Peter Scott, the President
of ACA and eminent higher education theorist, and Ulrich Teichler, the
world’s leading scholar on mobility in higher education.
