Try a slim volume entitled "The Victorian Railway Worker" by Trevor May
(Shire Publications, Princes Risborough, 2000; ISBN 0 7478 0451 6; 32
pages; <http://www.shirebooks.co.uk/Social/social-bl.htm#vicrai>).
It doesn't say a lot about porters beyond this:
"Porters, of whom there were some 50,000 in the late 1870s, were far
from homogeneous. At a large station one might find both passenger and
goods porters, office porters and letter porters, clock-room porters and
cloackroom porters, and lamp porters."
But it does list over 20 other works in an extensive bibliography which
you may find useful. (And it's a snip at GBP 3.50!)
