I believe these were a (legal?) requirement where trains consisted only of
compartment stock.
By the the early 60's other than in places like the IOW and some outer
suburban routes, most remaining non-DMU local services used converted or
decanted ex main line corridor stock, so the separate ladies compartments
were no longer required.

My recollection of Ladies Only compartments is that they certainly survived
on the isle of Wight in the 1950s, and I think are replicated on the IWSR
stock at Haven Street. I seem to remember them on other Southern Region
compartment stck.
