-------------------------------------------------
COST 340 - Towards a European Intermodal Transport Network : Lessons from
History Final conference, Paris, La Grande Arche de La Défense, 13-15 June
2005

Under the patronage of the Minister of Transport, Equipment, National and
Regional Development Service, Tourism and the Sea and of the State Secretary
of Transport and the Sea (to be confirmed)

First announcement / Call for papers

Since starting in 2000 the Technical and Scientific Cooperation Action -
COST 340, ‘Towards a European Intermodal Transport Network: Lessons from
History’, has gathered together many academic and policy researchers -
historians, geographers, economists, engineers - from several countries (a
total of 18 in 2004).

Action COST 340 analyses and presents, independent of ideology and
theoretical preconceptions, the history of trans-European connections and
intermodal transport, two major factors in the integration of Europe for
over a century.

Action COST 340 provides the analytical framework needed to define
successful transport policies and offers a series of recommendations that
will help determine priorities for projects contemplated by the European
authorities.

1. Four years of innovative research

The conference concludes four years of research. It aims to present and
summarize the major findings from the point of view of the community of
transport experts in Europe, be they involved in politics, economics or
policy research.

The conference will further the already extensive dialogue promoted by the
Action between transport experts and researchers in the human and social
sciences which is proving useful for planning the future of transport across
Europe. This is a unique opportunity to discuss with the Action’s
researchers the many policy-relevant issues that arose during the numerous
meetings, reports and publications that marked COST 340.

These issues include:
> Implementing intermodality within trans-European land-based networks
> Evaluating the future of trans-national unimodal networks The working
> of intermodality within the urban nodal network.

There will also be a presentation summarizing the studies debated within the
framework of Action COST 340 in Berlin (2001), Lisboa (2002), Neuchâtel
(2003), Eindhoven (2003), and Milano (2004).

2. Defining future research on intermodality: current results and prospects

Intermodal transport has not developed as fully as the European Commission
and national governments within the European Union hoped in the late 1980s.
As well as reporting on its historical development, the conference will also
plan a future agenda for research, with particular reference to the
development of policy for developing intermodal transport across Europe.

Papers may offer analyses of:
Case studies:
> Intermodality in passenger transport and tourism Intermodal nodes
> Intermodality in Larger Europe Transnational routes and intermodal
> corridors

Intermodal and transnational transport in Europe:
> Actors
> Institutions

Since all inter-modal transport involves networks, papers should bear in
mind the following two complementary aspects:
> ‘hard’ infrastructures: physical networks, interconnection and
> terminal points ‘soft’ infrastructures: political, legal, commercial and
financial measures aimed at overcoming hurdles that limit inter-modal
transport.

> Papers (15-20 minutes) may be presented either in French or in English.
> Proposals must include the paper title, a 15-line (minimum) summary, and a
1-page (maximum) CV including a list of the author's most recent relevant
publications.
> Travel expenses will be covered for pariticpants who deliver papers.
> Deadline for proposals: 15 April 2005
