The third annual meeting of the International Association for the History of
Transport, Traffic and Mobility (T2M) will held in York at the National
Railway Museum, 6-9 October, 2005. The main theme of the meeting is 'Tourism
and T2M', although offers of papers on any other aspect of T2M will be most
welcome. The Call For Papers is now available.
The opening address will be given by the distinguished historian Professor
David Nye of the University of Warwick. Professor Nye is well known for his
many books on the social and cultural history of technology in North
America.
Professor John Urry of Lancaster University is the keynote speaker.
Professor Urry has written extensively on the sociology and history of
tourism, and is currently researching the consequences of ever-increasing
levels of mobility for contemporary societies.
The registration fee will be GBP120, including the awards supper on Saturday
evening. However, substantial discounts will be available to anyone
registering before 1 September 2005. For members of T2M, the discounted fee
will be GBP60; for non-members, GBP100. Non-members may join T2M when
registering and enjoy the members' discount. We shall be posting the
registration form shortly.
Warning! There will be a very high demand for accommodation in York during
the period of the conference as there will be a horse-race meeting in the
city. You are strongly advised to book your room as soon as possible. There
is no designated conference hotel, but York has a wide range of
accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets, much of which is within
walking distance of the conference venue. Visit the York Tourism Bureau for
suggestions and bookings. For a mid-price hotel conveniently close to the
railway station and the NRM, we recommend the Premier Travel Inn (formerly
Premier Lodge).
