Though considered outdated mode of transport, trams
may soon run between Pune railway station and
Pimpri-Chinchwad, an industrial township on the
outskirts of Pune, around 170 km from Bombay (Mumbai),
in western India.
"The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has plans
to run trams on a strech between Pimpri-Chinchwad and
Pune railway station and the Corporation has also made
an allocation for it in this year's budget," president
of Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and
Agriculture S B (Ravi) Pandit said here today.
Though in India, trams are run only in Kolkata, they
are used world over and it makes sense to use this
mode of transport as it can be brought in quick
succession and used as local trains, Pandit said.
