_Notice of Temporary Closure: the National Railway Museum’s Research
Centre_* *
_Search Engine Update: Lottery Bid Successful_* *
The NRM is about to embark on a £3.5 million plan to improve access to
its library, archive and image collections. This will greatly enhance
the research and storage facilities.
*/ /*
*/To enable building work to take place the Research Centre will close
to the public from Friday 27^th January 2006 until further notice./*__
*/Why? /*Thousands of previously unseen national treasures will be
accessible for the first time as part of a new £3.5 million project at
the National Railway Museum (NRM) called Search Engine.
With the help of a £995,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF),
the Museum plans to throw open its vast archive of the largest and
richest collection of railway related library, archive and image
collections in the world, which have previously been hidden away in
locked basements underneath the world’s largest railway museum in York.
The project will create a new public archive centre on the NRM’s Great
Hall Balcony where anyone visiting the museum will be able to drop-in
and have their questions answered directly from the museum’s archives
without making an appointment.
*/How long? /*Construction work for Search Engine will get underway in
the New Year. As well as the new public archive centre, the project
includes the refurbishment and expansion of the museum’s library and
also of the storage archive vaults which will be opened to the public on
a regular basis. The project is expected to be completed by autumn 2007.*//*
*/Business as usual:/* Up to the closure on Friday 27^th January 2006,
the Research Centre will be open as normal, Monday-Friday 10:00-17:00
(with the exception of the usual Christmas closure from 26^th December –
2^nd January). We have rearranged the reading room so that we can now
accommodate more readers than previously so as to give more people the
chance to use the Research Centre in advance of the closure.
During the closed period (after 27^th January) there will be no access
to the library and archive collections. However we will continue to
answer simple enquiries by post, telephone and email. Photographic
