Since 1826 the Christmas Lectures, given at the Royal Institution (Ri),
have been demonstrating to young people the excitement of science. These
Lectures have been televised for almost forty years. The Ri, in
conjunction with Channel Five Television wishes to invite applications for
the Christmas lecturer in 2005.
Applications are invited from scientists at the cutting edge of research
to present a series of 5 fifty-minute lectures at the Ri during December
2005, which will be recorded by Channel Five Television and broadcast over
the Christmas holidays. The theme of the lectures will be based on a life
sciences topic. Applicants must meet the following criteria:
1. Be the holder of an established academic post.
2. Be resident in the UK during preparation and delivery of the lectures.
3. Be able to make scientific theory and concepts intelligible and
exciting to a young audience.
4. Be able to present in an accessible manner on TV, although previous
experience of TV presenting is not necessary and appropriate training can
be given.
5. Be prepared to attend regular meetings in London between May and
December 2005 and be available for recording and rehearsals throughout
December.
6. Be available mid-July to mid-August 2006 to present the Lectures again
in Japan and Korea (for recording on Japanese and Korean TV).
7. Have the approval of their university, institution or employer.
The lecturer will receive an honorarium, and travel and subsistence
expenses for delivery of the lectures.
Applicants should submit five copies of: a one-page synopsis of their
suggested series of 5 lectures on a topic of their choice together with a
one-page summary of their CV and the names of two referees.
A panel will draw up a first stage short list during April and selected
candidates will be invited to submit a short video presentation for
further consideration by the panel. Final interviews will take place on 29
April 2005.
