There are seriously well informed people here who will step in with the best
career advice, but one thought is that you should talk to your previous
employer, IBM, about your interests and see if they have any needs in this
area. They know you, you know them. And these days they are thinner on the
ground than they were on spreading the word about science and technology.
More important, you probably have an understanding of an important but
seriously badly reported area of science and technology, software and the IT
business. Coverage is all given over to anoraks and people fighting Mac
versus PC wars.
Try explaining WebSphere to people! IT is science and needs some PESTs.

PS Don't mention your "leaving package" or someone will snap you up and work
you to death before the pension kicks in.

Bella
This has moved me to make my first posting on this list. I agree it sounds
like a terrific job and I have the application form in front of me. But I
decided I don't have sufficient scientific background so I wish you the best
of luck :-) The form is straightforward.
Maybe someone on this list can give me some suggestions.
I have just left IBM after a career in learning and development because I
really wanted to try and do something in the public understanding of science
before I get too old (I am now in my mid-fifties). I have enrolled on the OU
MSc in Science starting in Feb but would like to get involved in doing
something as soon as possible (as well as studying for the MSc).
Salary is not a big issue - the leaving package will keep me going for a
bit. I would gladly work on a voluntary basis for a short time to get good
experience. As a customer facing consultant in learning and development I
would hope my communications skills are pretty good (interviewing, writing,
presenting, public speaking, use of technology etc). I was a whiz at
science at school (scholarship to Cambridge) and have maintained an amateur
interest - but I am not a scientist.
I am looking for any role which involves researching and communicating
scientific issues in a clear, relevant and objective way.
Any ideas or contacts would be appreciated.
Cheers
Mark

Hi Alun,
Wow - what a great opportunity. It's not everyday that a job like
this falls into my in-box!
Where do I get the application pack from? The advertisment gave a link
to another website, but I wasn't sure where to go on there, and I
presume that equal ops means that this job will be an application form
affair, and not just about sending a CV.
Presumably the science and technology team members have different
specialisations. How specialised is the research that they report on
in this role? So would the position involve working mostly on subjects
related to my background or would it be more general and involve
researching entirely new subjects.
Thanks very much for posting this, you've made my morning! I'm going
to get straight on with writing something and then keep my fingers
crossed for a month. :)
