Dear all
As list owner I've just come back from a meeting to find a flurry of emails. A couple of points:
1) Out-of-office emails generally do not reach the list. You'll only receive them if you send a message to the list. This is annoying in itself so members are encouraged to suspend their name from the list when they're on leave etc. Instructions on doing this appear automatically at the end of every message and will appear at the bottom of this one.
With regards to the particular case of Sue Charles, I've queried this issue with her before and it's something to do with her company's email set-up. The solution suggested by Jiscmail was to create a list of words and phrases that - if included in an email - would be rejected (e.g. "on ===leave", "out=of=the=office" etc) (extra characters are included here to avoid this message being rejected!). Unfortunately Sue Charles' email doesn't contain any of these words on this occasion and I don't want to put any legitimate words on the black list. I'll contact her again.
2) Remember that clicking on "reply" will send your message to the whole list. The issue of "reply" meaning "reply-to-list" has been discussed occasionally over the last few years and the consensus is in favour of replying to the whole list as a way of encouraging list discussion and communication.
Regards
Louise

Jon,
But what about the senders of the dozen or so
I'm-not-in-the-office-right-now emails you've just received since sending
your message to the list. Or are they ciphers created by the list owner as
a deliberate ploy to give us pause for thought before ever sending emails
to the list?
