Vacancy - Science Communicator
6 month placement - full time

science made simple is a small business based in Cardiff that undertakes a
range of projects to promote and communicate science, engineering and
technology. Our mission is to provide a high quality science communication
service using innovative ways to enthuse people about science and
technology. We specialise in the promotion of the physical sciences and
engineering. Recent clients include the Institute of Physics, Cardiff
University,Thinktank, EPSRC, NESTA and the Royal Institution. In addition we
provide a range of science shows to schools, colleges and festivals, and
offer training courses in science communication.

Due to increased demand we are now looking for an extra science communicator
to work with us, initially for a 6 month period from October 05 to March 06.
This six month period is a training period and the salary reflects that the
successful applicant will be gaining valuable experience in a range of
skills during the placement. It is hoped that on completion of the placement
the applicant may gain further employment with us.

salary     
£14,000, fixed term contract for 6 months (1 month probationary period)
The position will be available from October 2005. After 6 months the
position, and the salary, will be reviewed.
 
job description
*    To present the existing range of science shows to schools and other
audiences
*    To develop new science shows to expand our services
*    To travel to locations across the UK to deliver the shows
*    To assist with project work where required
*    To maintain demonstration equipment and source suppliers where
necessary
*    To help administer the booking, advertising and marketing of our
services
*    To assist with the upkeep of the website content
*    To assist with training courses and support materials
*    To take part in regular training as required
*    Other duties that may arise to support the day to day running of the
company

what we are looking for*
*    Good presentation and communication skills
*    Enthusiasm, initiative and a passion for science
*    Experience and awareness of the skills required to communicate to a
range of different audiences
*    Excellent interpersonal skills and an awareness of good customer
service
*    A science degree, preferably in the physical sciences
*    A clean driving licence (essential) and own vehicle (desirable)
*    Permission to work in the UK
*    IT skills, particularly the use of Powerpoint, email and writing for
the web.
*    Flexibility with working hours - evening, weekend and overnight stays
are sometimes required
*    Willingness and flexibility to travel throughout the UK, and possibly
overseas
*    An interest in marketing and working with the media

Closing date for applications is 5pm on Friday September 16th, 2005.
Interviews will be held on Wednesday 28th September when successful
applicants will be asked to give a short science presentation lasting no
longer than 5 minutes. Due to the nature of the work, the successful
applicant will be required to undergo a CRB check.
