From Monday 4th July 2005, the ICA theatre will become the unique site for a
groundbreaking, time-based installation, transforming into a live, working
scientific laboratory. Volunteer scientists will conduct genuine experiments
using DNA sequencing technology - used in the Human Genome Project - in the
hope of isolating DNA responsible for specific language impairment (SLI), a
disorder characterised by problems with verbal communication. The public
will be able to see a real lab working on a day-to-day basis, talk to
scientists, and take part in the analysis of the results. The event runs
from the 4th to the 18th of July and will be open from 12.00 till 7.30pm.
Due to a last minute withdrawal we urgently require a volunteer team leader
to run the laboratory on a day to day basis for the 15 days that the event runs.
The scientific work consists of mainly PCR and sequencing reactions, and
loading the DNA sequencer. The volunteer will act as a team leader and will
direct the other volunteers to all the resources and equipment they need;
decide on the experimental strategy for each day; ensure laboratory best
practise is maintained; and oversee the lab meetings. An important role will
be to interface with members of the public.

nature of the science.

human genome project.
