While these goals weren't met, some intelligent-design advocates associated
with the Discovery Institute, found a receptive ear at the
Pennsylvania-based Templeton Foundation. Between 1994 and 2002, the
foundation funded nearly 800 courses, including several on intelligent
design. It has also supported research by William Dembski, who headed an
intelligent-design center at Baylor University, and Guillermo Gonzalez,
co-author of a 2004 book, "The Privileged Planet." The book claimed to
discern a designer from the earth's position in the cosmos. Mr. Gonzalez, an
assistant professor of astronomy at Iowa State, received $58,000 from the
foundation over three years.

Templeton-funded proponents of intelligent design include Christopher
Macosko, a professor of chemical engineering at University of Minnesota. Mr.
Macosko, a member of the National Academy of Engineering, became a
born-again Christian as an assistant professor after a falling-out with a
business partner. For eight years, he's taught a freshman seminar: "Life: By
Chance or By Design?" According to Mr. Macosko, "All the students who finish
my course say, 'Gee, I didn't realize how shaky evolution is.' "
Another recipient of Templeton funding, Harold Delaney, a professor of
psychology at the University of New Mexico, taught an honors seminar in 2003
and 2004 on "Origins: Science, Faith and Philosophy." Co-taught by Michael
Kent, a scientist at Sandia National Laboratories, the course included
readings on both sides as well as a guest lecture by David Keller, another
intelligent-design advocate on the New Mexico faculty

I don't think that science journalists should get associated with this
organisation at all if they want to keep their intellectual independence.

Not at all, they may fund a project that has pro-ID connections (although I
don't know anything about the project you mention), but the general ethos is
to support more mainstream science.

Is the Templeton foundation not an organisation promoting the teaching of
Intelligent Design at schools and universities?
It finances the "Universite Interdisciplinaire de Paris," which is an
organisation supporting ID.

Templeton-Cambridge Journalism Fellowships in Science and Religion
Deadline: Dec. 15
The Templeton Foundation has announced an annual fellowship program that
will enable 10 print, broadcast or online journalists to pursue an
intensive two-month course of study in issues of science-and-religion. The
fellowship includes three weeks of seminars at the University of Cambridge,
a $15,000 stipend, a book allowance and travel expenses.
The fellowship seeks to promote a deeper understanding and a more informed
public discussion of the creative interface of science and religion. During
the term of fellowship, journalists will have time for independent, private
study as well as access to renowned thinkers in an extraordinary
intellectual and cultural setting. Potential areas of study include
comparison of the methods of science and religion, cosmology, neuroscience,
genetic engineering and spirituality and health. Fellows will be encouraged
to write and publish news stories, editorial pieces or magazine articles at
the end of the program.
Applicants must demonstrate an interest in the field, originality of
thought displayed in previous writings and a superior record of
journalistic achievement. The awards are open to journalists, writers and
editors, including freelancers, with a minimum of three years of
experience; priority will be given to mid-career and senior journalists.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Applicants are asked to submit online:
? A completed application form
? A detailed resume, including a list of publications
? Names, titles and contact information for three professional references
? Three samples of their best journalistic work
? An essay of no more than 1,500 words on their interest in science and
religion
Fellows will be announced on Feb. 28, 2006. For more information, or to
