They simply fail to back up this assertion with any evidence. All,
and I mean all, of the various claims that have made about things
being irreducibly complex or not having any precursors in the fossil
or biochemical record have be shown to be false.

In the vast majority of cases this is simply a veil to hide behind as
a result of the US Supreme Court ruling in 1987 (IIRC) that it was
illegal to teach creationism in US school science classes as it
violates the 1st amendment to the US constitution.
ID is creationism in a cheap Sunday dress. Its proponents are on a
political mission not a scientific one or even, for most of them, a
religious one.
