SPEAK, ZAHA HADID
[“There was a loss in the belief in the realm of possibility.”]
[“I’m telling you, if you don’t stop it I will call a lawyer now.”]
Say, “Look we have a great building!”
Painful for
everybody, but it’s important that we actually don’t say . . .
“Amazing!”

I can’t remember exactly why I didn’t produce a piece of writing out of the
experience of viewing (on three separate occasions) an exhibit of the work
of Zaha Hadid at the National Building Museum in Washington DC
approximately two years ago. Starting perhaps ten years ago, I
had “intended” to write about this Iraqi-born, London-based architect.
Then, last Sunday, prompted by her becoming the first woman to receive
architecture’s most prestigious award, the Pritzker prize, chance laid
before me perhaps six minutes of video coverage which I assumed wouldn’t be
retrievable. Despite very short advance notice, I was prepared enough to
focus the snapshot above and I hope to continue writing about her when
other aspects come into view.
