After tonight's performance I am in no doubt that Joseph Haydn's 'The
Creation' is a great work. It has enormous energy and vitality. Quite
astounding when you think Haydn was well into his 60s when he composed it.
The orchestra, the choir and the soloists all contributed equally to a great
evening.
This morning's concert was the two Mozart piano quartets and the Robert
Schumann piano quartet. Yet again I so much enjoyed experiencing Mozart's
quicksilver intelligence as he was forever doing things with the music.
And I picked up the CD of Ian Bostridge's 'Die schone Mullerin' (accompanied
by Mitsuko Uchida) for a reasonable price. His performance on Thursday night
was the experience of the week. It was a privilege to be there. I wonder if
he is better live than on disk.
So that is the end of the Mozartfest and my next holiday in Bath will be the
Literature Festival around March. I will get my programme in January.
