Hey Ken
I don't know if you have to be in opposition but you do argue back
sometimes <g>. I can empathize with your final refusal to go with Free
Jazz, but I have to say that there are times when it is what I want to
hear (others when I wouldn't go near it).
I remember a concert in Winnipeg of Cage's prepared piano pieces (or
one long piece); when 3 noes actually joined together I was delighted.
On the other hand, the man himself reading one of his versions of
Thoreau was stunning (as was he, but that's another story). Recently I
took out some CDs of his early (40s-50s) piano pieces & they were
wonderfully melodic; I'd try them just to see....
But as we all seem to be agreeing, most of the people we admire learned
somehow from masters/mentors however found or chosen, & they knew that
such learning was a necessary process if they were to do anything
themselves.
And yes, I think some of us, certainly I, have mentioned meeting
precisely 'run into the writing student who decided nothing worth a
damn was said before he came along, so that he has nothing to learn
from any school of old farts'. Tear my hair, man...
