Written during an in-person screening by Dutch documentarian Jos de Putter
of his 2002 film [“The Damned and the Sacred”] on a Chechen dance group
bravely continuing amidst traumatic circumstances. I decided to try to
limit myself to words exiting the mouth of the troupe’s mentor as he guided
the children and adolescents now performing the traditional works he had
one starred in himself. The film’s director was at least as impassioned in
the question & answer session following the screening, but I must have
exhausted myself while writing in the dark and was largely unable to quarry
Jos de Putter’s rather good English.
