btw, Judy, last night in Leicester, as well been the US return import
Halloween, was also very much the eve of Diwali. As too it is part of the
build up to Bonfire Night (one the guessing games here this week is to work
out which fireworks are for Diwali wnd which for the burning of the
unfortunate Guy)
So you have this lovely palimpsest of mixed up traditions - the consumer
culture marketed Halloween formerly All Souls Night; the genuine but
transplanted across the globe Hindu festival of light; and wonderfully
disassociated from context celebration of the defence of both the wisest
fool in Christendom, the Scots head of the English state church, and
Parliament against the threat of the Papists by people who, even if
nominally Anglican in parts, would in many cases be perplexed by being asked
what an Anglican church signified, a celebration of commemorating the
burning the unfortunate Guido who of course wasn't even burnt (he was
hanged - he jumped in fact to break his neck - to avoid slow strangulation)
Best
