Oh, I see - it's that sort of not-quite-so-definite-after-all article
you get sometimes in translations from the French. "Le code metrique",
meaning, "code of a metrical nature" rather than "the one and only
metrical code". Well, OK. I would tend to drop the definite article in
English, though.
