I have spent over thirty hours this week viewing the extended versions of
Lord of the Rings interspersed with the various Appendices and it has been a
profound experience. I will never forget the Kiwi stuntsmen doing the haka
for Viggo Mortensen in appreciation of his character as a man. And Viggo
speaking in his native Norwegian before a vast Oslo audience at its premier
there. There are two seperate entwined stories. Tolkiens myth for the
English and the New Zealand story of the making of the films. As someone who
has failed at everything in life it was so heartwarming to see such happy
endings to both epic stories. It really warms one to follow the unknown
story of the films' making thru the six Appendices. And the joyful
camaraderie of the acting ensemble and the mammoth technical staff. My
recommendation to anyone who can spare the cash is to send off to Amazon for
the extended box set. If you have a DVD player. It is the experience of a
lifetime to view the twelve diske. And I should say that there is much
background knowledge from such experts as Tom Shippey and the publisher
Rayner Unwin etc. I have had a lovely week.
