But more than that, Peter. He went to the same school as me (but he
finished as dux and I was close to the bottom of the heap) and he went to
Glasgow University (only he got a first and I didn't). I could go on -- I
occasionally feel that some Calvanist god with a bleak sense of humour
created Robert Crawford to put me to shame.
I had a lot of contact with Robert Crawford back in the Eighties when he was
at Oxford, then Glasgow. I remember encouraging him to get stuck into the
Enlightenment. But I havent been in touch with him in Yonks. As for his
poetry it was a breath of Scottish fresh air in the beginning but nowadays
it has trivialised away. Which is a great shame cos he had the talent. And
he came from my father's school.
