Thanks for the question re my process of composition, Doug. Most of my
texts via film are literally written while watching fictional films. The
biggest challenge occurs when it's my first viewing of the auteur's work,
as in the case of Wong Kar-Wai. Occasionally, documentary films will
provide interview material which I'm able to mine for texts about artists
in other medias, or about filmmakers. -- Barry Alpert
