Having spent many years in the academic world in a previous incarnation, I
didn't find this to be at all true. In my experience, the calculus "scholarly
reputation = pages published x prestige of venue" was strict and universal.

Rereading the above exchange, I can see now that I may have missed the point,
which is that in academic journal publishing getting something on the web site
is as valuable as getting it in print. Do doubt, but the mention of academic
publishing sent my memory back to my own academic days, which was before the
internet became so important. At any rate, my comment about the calculus of
prestige is still, I think, valid.
