I fudged details in the "poem" deliberately. No opthalmic surgeon does
two eyes at once. He did one eye in May, the other in June. The days
in between were horrible. I had one perfectly clear eye with 20-20
vision, the other was something like 20-gazillion (I'd worn bifocals for
years). The good eye was supposed to take over most of the work. Not
really. I had to drive to Baltimore one afternoon for an Accepted
Students weekend, and I had both my ex and our Accepted Student in the
car. As twilight fell I realized I could not balance my eyes and could
not see the road. My depth perception was nonexistent and my peripheral
vision was a wreck. Oncoming cars on a freeway were horrifying. How we
got to the hotel has to be miraculous. In June when the doctor did the
second eye, everything looked beautiful. I'd worn glasses since I was 9
and no longer needed (or need) them except the drugstore magnifiers you
buy for close work. A world without blur...amazing.
