I think that "somebody" might also include the wealthy Californian who
offered to purchase Terri Schiavo's guardianship from her husband for $1
million. He refused. Also the governor of Florida, Jeb Bush, who tried
to have the husband's same legal rights removed by a court by accusing
him of neglect of his wife. The (Roman Catholic) governor "graciously"
offered to step in as legal guardian of Terri Schiavo. The court
rejected the argument.
This dilemma is not about resources so much as medical ethics and
personal family decisions.
Unfortunately, it has become polluted by these people, whose forced
intervention in a private matter is not unlike the forced occupation of
a whole country. It's a microcosmic parallel to the invasion of Iraq.
Family pain and personal decisions have been projected onto the national
scene in a morally divisive, non-healing way. It's the mark of Bush.
Everyday, I am saddened by one more thing in this country.
