Come on, Dom, am I the only one to remember the famous comedian of yore
who told us about the quandary of the fellow who crossed a river on a
log & came up against a young lady going in the opposite direction,
without any space for manoeuvring - he didn't know whether to toss
himself off or block her passage. I think he got tossed off BBC radio in
the 40s for similar lapses of bon goût. And there's a Mr Tossoff in
*Ulysses* somewhere, on the very witty translation of which into German
I remember S.S.Prawer remarking in the TLS a couple of decades ago.
