I've been playing many tapes of British/Irish poets
reading in my class this semester (so far Larkin,
Hughes, WN Herbert, Harrison, Duffy, Raworth, Leonard,
Boland, Heaney, Kwesi Johnson. et alia).
Some of these would get tossed out of Church -- the
choir would be astonished by Harrison's vehement
pronunciation of the "C" word in "V", or Herbert's
enthusiastic recitiation of the "Caberet McGonagall."
I just got Hughes's "101 Poems to Remember" on eBay
but haven't listened to it yet. Only a few of these
exhibit the "poetry voice" but I've heard it often
enough.
