I'm not high on the objectivity scale for this one. My younger son Ben
was in the play, which was the Goucher College Drama Department's senior
production in April 2003. I was entirely enthralled, not just because
my son (who played the cab driver and several other roles) was
unrecognizable from the kid I helped raise, but because I am in fact a
sucker for the kind of Kaufman-adapted Epic Theater construction. I
don't remember any dead spots. I remember being wrecked to the point of
tears when the young man playing Dennis Shepard addressed the
orange-jumpsuited Aaron McKinney (who was seated right next to me) on
the day of sentencing. I was okay until then, but when he referred to
Matthew as his firstborn son and his hero, I lost it. The version I
read online is far shorter than the actual courtroom transcript.
Someone edited for maximum impact. Someone succeeded.
They just took down the Laramie website from Goucher's main site. A
pity because there were tons of links to anything related to the issues
the play presented. They even had a link to the notorious "Rev." Fred
Phelps' sites www.godhatesfags.com and www.godhatesamerica.com.
Remarkable stuff if you read it on an empty stomach.
