Despite the evidence in his book Jared Diamond says he is a cautious
optimist. Tim Flannery seems main consultant on the Australia chapter and I
presume they will be friends from Jared Diamond's year in Canberra and
subsequent visits to Australia in his New Guinea years, so I am not
surprised at him agreeing with Jared. But the book is really a nightmare.
