MY DAILY ENTRY
(November 12, 2005)
This morning I awakened
with the usual dread.
"Hello Darkness"? not
a poem, not my old friend.
Just that it was.
I met with some people
early in the day, we
drank coffee together
and then I played with
one of the guy's dogs
and listened to him warn me
I cannot bring people back
from the dead.
I decided I am not a human being
so much as a misplaced cat
who needs to be among his own,
so I let my non-students
grade their own papers and
returned instead to the
animal shelter, where I got
five cats adopted to lovely people
who are no more or less wacky than me.
In the spring, little gods
of trees and watersprites permitting,
I am going to learn massage therapy
because someone once saved me life that way,
and because it is enough of bitching
about corporate America and time
instead to leave it.
At the end of a the day I come home
to a letter from a distant person
in a distant land, and when I read it
I was struck with the joy of smelling
a eucalyptus grove.
