Patrick, I agree that it's fiendishly difficult to avoid sentimentality when
dealing with such a subject. But I reckon you're clear of that by miles; my
sentimentality meter is extremely sensitive, and it didn't tremble. You
leave space for the reader's emotions by not swamping him/her with yours,
which is damn difficult -- thanks!
Personally, I'd keep Princess -- you've made your case -- oh lor', of course
she's a princess, by right of conquest.
