a lovely turn in the complicated story of family and animals...
As for pets that pee on the things of their human enemies, I recall bits of
Vikram Seth's 'Golden Gate', which I'd thought unlikely till your summary
confirmed it...
best from Max
I spent the morning trying to convince a poetry-writing class to summon up
their memories of animal encounters in order to write poems in the same
category as Lawrence's 'Snake', Elizabeth Bishop's several, and others
lurking in our anthology. Marian is going to write about the budgies new to
their house which she and her mother talk to a lot, and the 'Indian
somethings', very bright plumage, which bite the hands that feed them. Most
in the class hadn't been to the zoo since they were very young, a serious
omission, surely...
In the pet shop I saw a sign: Siamese fighting fish: great pets, great
gifts.
