I wouldn't call the Last Night of the Proms right wing, really; these days
it's nothing but an excuse for a knees-up, and doesn't seem to have too much
to do with the serious-minded concert series which the rest of the Prom
season comprises. Even the First Night is a genuine musical performance. But
the Last Night is just so much tickertape.
As for the cricket -- well, this has been a splendid series, with fantastic
cricket played by both sides. The really noticeable thing in this country
has been the number of people who would normally change channels when the
cricket came on, who've been totally caught up in it this time. I hope their
interest stays alive, and creates a climate favourable to encouraging more
young people to take up the game.
Incidentally, don't let's forget, the Women's Test between England and
Australia was also won by England this year.
